Carnegie presents advice on listening, showing appreciation, handling disagreements, and building cooperation. Examples illustrate his approach to communication in personal and professional relationships.
Carnegie organises his advice into short principles, each illustrated with an anecdote: do not criticise, give honest appreciation, talk in terms of the other person’s interests, let the other person feel the idea is theirs. The material came out of courses he taught to working adults.
It has sold in the tens of millions and remains the reference point for almost every book on influence written since. The tone is plain and the principles are meant to be practised rather than admired.
Dale Carnegie (1888–1955) was an American writer and lecturer, and the developer of courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Born into poverty on a farm in Missouri, he was the author of several bestsellers, including How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.
