Carnegie discusses ways to examine worries, make decisions, and direct attention toward manageable tasks. Anecdotes and exercises support his practical approach to everyday concerns.
Carnegie’s companion volume takes worry as a problem to be worked on rather than endured. He proposes living in day-tight compartments, asking what the worst outcome actually is and preparing to accept it, then setting about improving on it.
The book is built from case histories and short exercises, and its advice on decision-making and on keeping busy has outlasted the period detail around it.
Dale Carnegie (1888–1955) was an American writer and lecturer, and the developer of courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Born into poverty on a farm in Missouri, he was the author of several bestsellers, including How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.
