Crusoe goes to sea against his father’s advice, is shipwrecked on an island near the mouth of the Orinoco, and spends twenty-eight years there. He salvages what he can, builds shelter, grows barley, keeps goats, and records it all with an accountant’s attention to stock and dates.
Often called the first English novel, it reads less like an adventure than a long inventory of problems solved, which is exactly why it has held readers since 1719.
- How Defoe makes survival compelling through inventory, measurement and slow practical problem-solving.
- Why the single footprint is one of the most effective shocks in English fiction.
- What Crusoe’s ledger of comforts against miseries shows about how he keeps going.
- How the relationship with Friday reads now, and why modern readers argue over it.
- The role of Crusoe’s religious reflection in structuring his years alone.
- Why this book is so often cited as the first English novel.
