Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting old newspapers so the record always agrees with the Party. He begins a private diary, starts an affair with Julia, and lets himself imagine that the regime can be resisted. Both acts are crimes, and Orwell follows them to their conclusion.

The novel gave ordinary English the words it still uses for political control: Big Brother, thoughtcrime, doublethink, Newspeak. Its lasting force comes less from the machinery of surveillance than from the argument that a state which controls language can control what people are able to think.
