Tom Sawyer lives with Aunt Polly in St Petersburg, Missouri, and treats the town as material for adventure. He talks other boys into whitewashing a fence for him, witnesses a murder in the graveyard with Huck Finn, attends his own funeral, and is finally lost in a cave with Injun Joe somewhere in it.

Twain wrote it as a boy’s book that adults would read, and the episodes have become part of the American vocabulary.

  1. How the whitewashing episode works as a joke about desire and scarcity.
  2. Why Twain lets real danger, a murder and a killer at large, into a comic boyhood novel.
  3. What the funeral scene shows about Tom’s appetite for an audience.
  4. How Huck is introduced here, and what makes him the more interesting character.
  5. How Twain captures a Mississippi river town without sentimentalising it.
  6. Why the cave sequence still works as sustained suspense.
